OMNIE UFH chosen for Cambridge College decarbonisation programme

An East Anglian renewable heating specialist is employing OMNIE’s latest generation underfloor heating systems and controllers for the radical energy upgrade of an extensive multiple occupancy building in Cambridge, as part of a long term decarbonisation programme for one of the historic colleges.

Infinite Heating and Energy is undertaking a range of work on behalf of the main contractor and is close to completing the installation of OMNIE’s TorFloor 2®, plus a small area of Ultimate 2, across most of the three floors of the 15-bedrom property. The company is fitting two Mitsubishi 8.5 KW air source heat pumps, one for the ground floor where the communal spaces are located and the second serving the top two floors.

The scope of Infinite Heating and Energy’s package also includes fitting a 12 KW array of photo-voltaic panels on the roof, which will top up a pair of 400 litre hot water tanks via their 3 KW immersion heaters, before the rest of their output is stored in the building’s bank of batteries.

The company’s founder, Josh McNally, commented:

“I set up Infinite Heating and Energy to offer renewable installations to customers across Cambridgeshire and bordering areas a couple of years ago and have been installing OMNIE products since the beginning; based on the quality of product range and the customer service provided.”

“We’ve linked OMNIE’s underfloor heating systems to both ground and air source heat pumps and here have used some of their Ultimate 2 where an old slab is being overlaid along with over 500 square metres of TorFloor 2®. As well as 100mm of PIR insulation across the ground floor, the building envelope is being uprated with internal wall insulation and other thermal upgrades being carried out as part of the college’s programme decarbonising all of its properties. Then to optimise performance of the heating we are fitting individual thermostats in every room, while we’re on course to complete on time.”

The new generation TorFloor 2® evolves from the market-leading TorFloor® predecessor by adding a 6mm thick chipboard upper panel with pre-foiled aluminium heat diffuser. Crucially, both panels feature matching routed channels to perfectly align around the 12mm water pipe, while the printed upper face clearly indicates the pipe’s position and the points where screws can be safely fixed.

Not only does this arrangement greatly reduce the risk of the pipe runs being accidentally damaged when floor coverings are installed or replaced, but the location of the routed channels places the warm water pipes closer to the surface: delivering faster warm-up times.
