Master Oak Wins interzum award 2023

Unilin Master Oak has been judged by an international of jury of experts for its ‘High Product Quality’ at interzum award 2023.

The respected experts from the fields of design, materials science and architecture of interzum awards 2023 have judged Unilin Master Oak HPL to have ‘High Product Quality’. Looking at innovation, functionality, quality, design and sustainability; the judges have decided that Master Oak has set itself apart from comparable products in the field of Materials and Nature.

Master Oak is Unilin’s HPL that looks and feels exactly like real oak. Featuring Unilin Timber Touch Technology that adds more depth, clarity and texture than any other HPL, Master Oak is often mistaken for wood veneer. In fact, it is a high-performance HPL surface that offers three times more scratch-resistance, easier maintenance and excellent durability. Master Oak can be used to bring the look and feel of natural oak in a range of applications including furniture, shelving, wall panels, doors and storage.

Ann De Blanck, product manager, Unilin Panels, says:

“Being recognised for the innovation, functionality, quality, design and sustainability of Master Oak by the respected judging panel of interzum awards 2023 is hugely satisfying. Master Oak’s High Product Quality in Materials and Nature joins a growing roster of international accolades, including DNA Paris Design Awards and MIAW Innovation Award – evidence of its excellence as an interior finish.”

The patented Timber Touch Technology used to produce Master Oak is unique to the industry, adding definition and detail so Master Oak textures go deeper than ever before.

Regular HPL decorative wood effects only have around three or four depth levels, while Master Oak has 64, for 20 times more texture. Timber Touch also gives a matt finish that has absent shine levels for a natural effect. A patented coating applied to the digital paper ensures that it has more colour play and depth, as well as better sharpness and contrast. The end result is a decorative surface that looks exactly like oak. This print technology also allows Unilin to create the largest pattern in the industry which means an authentic look and fewer repeats.

Looking towards global trends and exploring how natural wood finishes are used in commercial interiors, the Unilin design team has put together a range of six authentic oak looks that are versatile and usable in real world applications. Two of the options, Elegant Black and Everest White are exclusively available in Unilin’s coloured in core high pressure laminate (HPL). This special construction ensures that edges are the same colour as the Master Oak finish. Ideal for furniture and cabinetry construction, coloured in core leaves a smart edge. Matching edging tape and end grain edging tape is also available for all six Master Oak colours.

Unilin has applied the technologies in Master Oak to HPL and melamine surfaces for a wide range of applications including HPL doors and sheets, melamine faced MDF and chipboard, and shelving. Everywhere from retail, cafés and bars, hotel and offices to schools and hospitals can enjoy the comforting and relaxing look of natural oak.

The judges of interzum awards 2023 looked at the level of innovation within Master Oak, as well as material quality, the harmony of form and function, service life, sustainability and use of resources.

Organised in cooperation with Red Dot, interzum awards 2023 is exclusively for exhibitors at interzum, the global furniture supplier and interior design trade fair in Cologne, Germany. For four days (9th – 12th May 2023), the industry presents an exciting mix of new technologies, materials and surfaces. The awards are a key part of the event with a presentation ceremony taking place during the fair.
