Marmox Multiboard shapes up for East Midlands mini-mansion

The regional housebuilder undertaking the construction of a totally bespoke private house in Leicestershire has been introduced to the multiple benefits of Marmox Multiboards for the first time, but its operatives are so impressed with the versatile insulating backer boards that its site manager is certain they will feature in future projects.

The detached property will offer its new owners three spacious en-suite bedrooms as well as an upstairs games room with its own bathroom, while the living space downstairs links to a pool room with jacuzzi, steam room and showers. There is also an eight car garage and other outbuildings. The timber framed dwelling furthermore achieves Near-to-Zero energy standards, to which the Multiboard also contributes.

The developer of the exclusive property commented:

“This house has been designed to exceed the standards of Part L to the Building Regulations as well as offering luxury accommodation with high class finishes. There is mineral wool insulation within the bespoke timber frame, and then multi-foil insulation across the inner face, with the Marmox Multiboard as the third layer internally, which also serves as a render backer board within the swimming pool suite.

“The build is consuming hundreds of the 600 x 2500mm and 1200 x 2400mm boards in thicknesses of 20mm and 12.5mm. Then also in the steam room we have made use of the 20mm thick 600 x 1250mm Curved version of the Multiboard to build seating and to form an arch in the ceiling so that condensation will run off to the side rather than dripping on the occupants. The contractors had never seen Multiboard before, but have found it light to handle, easy to cut and fix with stainless steel screws using the special washers, and are impressed with the further benefits – in particular the good insulation values. They will definitely be using it again.”

While standard Marmox Multiboards are formed from rigid sheets of extruded polystyrene (XPS) faced on both sides with a layer of polymer modified concrete encapsulating glass fibre reinforcement, the Curved version features 2mm wide slices through 75% of their thickness, at 20 mm intervals.

This enables the 1250 x 600mm boards to be bent down to radii as tight as 200mm if fixed so that the slices close together. Even tighter radii can be achieved by folding the boards so that the ‘teeth’ open up.

They can either be fixed against a blockwork or other solid surface using a continuous coating of tile cement, or secured to timber battens at 300mm centres using screws and the special Marmox washers. This flexibility makes Curved Multiboards ideal for creating curving partitions, archways and cubicles or even moulded tiled seats. The XPS offers thermal conductivity of just 0.034 W/mK and forms a low porosity surface that is pre-primed ready for tiling, plastering or rendering. They present a quick to install, cost effective and very versatile solution for work in bathrooms, wetrooms and exterior applications.
