Marley Alutec’s rainwater gutter, fascia and soffit selected for Lanarkshire self-build property

Marley Alutec’s Evolve Deepflow, Tudor downpipes and Evoke fascia and soffit products have been selected for a new self-build residential property in Lanarkshire. The aluminium rainwater and roofline systems were chosen for their durability, high quality appearance and ease of installation, as they were fitted by the homeowners themselves.

Located near Carluke in Lanarkshire, the large, open plan bungalow overlooking the Clyde valley was built by the homeowner Vicky Pollard with the help of her partner. The exterior of the property is finished in black cladding with matching windows. Therefore, the Marley Alutec rainwater gutters, soffits and fascia products were specified in complementary Heritage Black and RAL 9005 colours.

Vicky explained the choice of aluminium:

“We didn’t want to use the plastic products on the market as we wanted something with a longer lifespan, but cast iron is too expensive and inconvenient. Aluminium was ideal as it offers quality, longevity and weather resistance.

“We were not familiar with what was available, but we researched the products and Marley Alutec seemed to be the right choice, especially as we wanted a more traditional, rounded look for the guttering. In addition to this, supply issues at the time we made enquiries meant that many other suppliers were not able to fulfil our requirements or meet the timescales of the project.”

The approximately 400sqm roof area of the property meant a rainwater gutter system was needed that could provide the required drainage capacity. In consultation with the homeowners, Drummond McKenzie, Marley Alutec Area Sales Manager for Scotland, who also provided assistance with measurements and calculations, made product recommendations. Marley Alutec Evolve Deepflow gutter and 76 mm Tudor downpipes in Heritage Black were selected to meet both the functional and design requirements. The Evolve Deepflow achieves industry leading flow rates of up to 4.9 litres per second (l/s) meaning it can serve up to 232sqm of roof area per downpipe.

Marley Alutec products are manufactured from high quality marine grade aluminium and finished in an architectural grade polyester powder coat (PPC) paint, which is designed for exterior use and will maintain its colour and gloss level for longer. As a result, the systems have a functional life expectancy of 50 years or more with minimal maintenance and only periodic aesthetic cleaning required.

In addition, Marley Alutec Evoke fascia and soffit products in RAL 9005 Jet Black were also selected. These are manufactured from 4 mm thick aluminium composite material and benefit from an architectural grade PVDF fluorocarbon paint that delivers a long-lasting finish.

All the Marley Alutec products have been designed for simple and straightforward installation and the aluminium gutter system is over 65% lighter than the cast iron alternative. The simplicity of installation was an important factor on this project as Vicky’s partner, a joiner by profession, was able to install the gutter, fascia and soffit products himself.

Vicky said:

“We are really pleased with the finished result and the seamless integration of the guttering, fascia and soffit. In particular, we’ve had a lot of positive comments about the guttering from visitors. Many people think it must be cast iron – proof that we have achieved an authentic traditional look.”

Drummond concluded:

“This project demonstrates how suitable our products are for self-build projects where quality must be paired with easy installation. It also highlights the versatility in terms of the design as the products complement the combination of modern and traditional elements on this property.”
