Crown Turns Back the Hands of Time With Cardiff Clock Tower Refurbishment

A range of products from Crown Paints’ portfolio of professional brands have been used to transform Cardiff’s iconic Roath Park Clock Tower, which dates back to 1915.

Members of Crown’s specification team collaborated closely with Cardiff City Council and professional painting contractor JJ Williams (Painting Services) Ltd, to devise a cost-effective and high-performance paint specification for the redecoration of the famous clock tower. Originally created as monument to Captain Robert Scott and his companions who set sail from Cardiff on their ill-fated voyage to Antarctica in 1910, the clock tower has become a popular and recognisable part of the city’s heritage and stands proudly in the middle of Roath Park Lake.

The refurbishment of the landmark, which took approximately four weeks to complete, utilised various products across Crown’s extensive portfolio of professional brands, with Sandtex Trade 365 smooth masonry paint and Sandtex Trade X-Treme X-Posure® used to repaint the main areas of the clock tower. Water-based masonry paint X-Treme X-Posure® has been specifically formulated for use in even the harshest of weather conditions and combines an attractive smooth matt finish with up to 20 years’ protection from the elements, making it the ideal product for the clock tower given its lake location.

The clock tower’s exterior woodwork was refreshed using Sadolin Beautiflex® Solvent Opaque Woodstain, which boasts a flexible coating for protection against both the weather and water. Its microporous formulation flexes with the substrate in order to resist cracking, flaking and peeling, making it a long-lasting solution for the iconic clock tower.

Crown Trade Full Undercoat was used on the clock tower prior to the recoating, and the refurbishment was finished using Crown Trade Full Gloss.

JJ Williams’ managing director, Graham Thomas, said:

“It was a privilege to be involved in the refurbishment of such an iconic structure and to help Andy Temple pay tribute to both his wife and his mother. Once we got up close to the surface, we realised the clock tower was in a worse state than first thought, and it required a thorough clean and some surface repairs.”

“We are extremely grateful to Crown Paints for the donation and found all of the coatings used to be easy to work with and gave excellent coverage and opacity. We are very pleased with the end result and hope that everyone who visits the lake will be just as happy!”

Jamie Williams, Crown Paints’ specification sales manager added:

“The clock tower in Cardiff’s Roath Park is not only an iconic part of the local landscape but also holds a special place within the city’s community and heritage. We’re proud to have been chosen to provide specification support and products for the tower’s refurbishment and we’re very pleased to see such a fantastic result”
