A major new building was required at North Middlesex University Hospital for a new Women and Children’s Centre. The scheme will accommodate the increase in maternity patients and around 2,000 additional births in North Middlesex. It forms part of a major reorganisation of hospital services in the boroughs of Barnet, Enfield and Haringey. The architects and project managers are AHP Architects & Surveyors.

The project is the biggest and most complex healthcare scheme to be built off site in the UK.

The £17.9m contract for principal contractor Kier Construction is the largest ever building project awarded to Yorkon.

The project, which was procured under the ProCure21+ framework, has been manufactured off site at the Yorkon production centre in York. This approach is radically reducing disruption to patient care during construction and the build programme to ensure the new facilities will be operational in line with the Trust’s clinical strategy and prior to the seasonal winter pressures. The scheme is being constructed using the new Yorkon off-site building system and comprises 152 steel-framed modules up to 18m long and in many different sizes and configurations to suit the building’s design and site. The units are being craned into position with doors, windows, first fix electrics and plumbing, and a high performance concrete floor pre-installed.
