In parallel to the refurbishment of Chemotherapy and LINAC facilities at James Cook University Hospital, a new £18m satellite outpatient facility has been developed: The Endeavour Unit.
Working in partnership with NBBJ Architects who developed the concept design, P+HS undertook the detailed design and technical delivery for the project. The positioning of the building and the new entrance was a prime driver for the design and related directly to the line of access to the existing Radiotherapy Department. A dedicated zone caters for patient drop off, with a protected canopy leading to the main entrance.
High specification, durable materials such as stone, porcelain and wood are used internally and artwork is embodied within the design giving a non-institutional feel. Patient areas are at ground level, accessed via a spacious double height centralized waiting zone that is broken down into smaller more intimate clusters that associate directly with the Outpatient Clinic, CT Scanner and the LINAC Suites, minimizing patient travel distances. In this configuration patient flows and way finding are kept simple, minimizing the need for signage.
The project has achieved BREEAM Excellent and includes ground source heat pumps, high levels of insulation, solar shading and an enhanced landscape strategy. The satellite design uses a narrow plan, providing daylight and natural ventilation to all working areas. An efficient circulation design has also led to additional area being available to create a larger more generous central public space that acts as the ‘heart’ of the building.
