Turner & Townsend to project-manage restoration of historic Toronto concert hall

Global construction consultancy Turner & Townsend has been chosen to project manage the restoration of Canada’s historic Massey Hall.

The Massey Hall Revitalisation project in downtown Toronto – expected to be completed by 2021 and to cost an estimated £72 million (CAD $150m) – will involve careful restoration of the interior and exterior of the 120-year-old building. The design has been developed by KPMB Architects.

Gerard McCabe, Managing Director for Turner & Townsend Canada, said:

“It is a privilege to be working on such a beautiful and renowned concert hall that has earned such a unique place in Canadian music history. We have worked with the Corporation over the past three years overcoming municipal, neighbour, legal and government funding challenges.

Our proven ability of restoring historic buildings and performing arts spaces around the world coupled with close working relationships with stakeholders and key decision makers stands us in good stead for delivering the planning and construction of Phase 2 and meeting the Corporation’s objective to ‘improve everything, change nothing’.”

The restored Massey Hall will include enhanced, physically accessible patron and artist amenities as well as space dedicated to education, performance and artist development.

Turner & Townsend will be providing project management expertise to guide the owners, the nonprofit Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall – through the planning, design, construction and occupancy of this landmark building.

Deane Cameron, President and CEO for the Corporation of Massey Hall and Roy Thomson Hall, added:

“The restoration project marks the beginning of an important journey for this remarkable Canadian cultural institution. Massey Hall is not only a national historic icon that we all treasure, but a place where the world will continue to experience music history as it is made.

“Our strong relationship with Turner & Townsend, which has consistently shown a deep understanding of our needs, was key to their appointment in the role of project manager. Their specialist knowledge, capability and experience in driving change – and exceptional past performance – gave us complete confidence on a successful delivery for future generations of music lovers.”
