Ochil Timber Products has designed, manufactured and supplied a complete structural timber frame for a large, 1248m sq, private house in rural Scotland.
The off-site manufactured, engineered timber frame uses Ochil’s high-performance SpaceStud system, including SpaceStud, SpaceJoist and SpaceRafter.
The SpaceRafter roof was manufactured in SJ10 metal web joists in lengths over six metres. The “V” shaped webs include expanded polystyrene insulation to give a thermal performance in excess of the target U-value of 0.15.
Says MD Andrew McAree:
“The roof system was ordered when the architects recognised the cost savings SpaceStud offered over their original solid timber specification. Using SpaceRafter it was possible to increase centres from 400 to 600mm and to use standard sarking instead of glued and screwed plywood construction, which brought labour and cost savings.” The SpaceStud open panel walls were specified for their light weight, dimensional accuracy and ease of ‘flat pack’ construction on site. The 206mm deep timber studs enabled extra insulation to be fitted and a 304mm deep SpaceJoist floor system, also manufactured with “V” shaped metal webs, allowing for easy services installation, completed this Ochil “Space House.”
