Graduates sell advantages of further training

Between them they have degrees in journalism and geography with urban and regional planning, but two graduates have found themselves at home in the sales department of Redrow Homes.

The award-winning homebuilder is committed to providing training and employment opportunities to young people and an impressive 15 per cent of its 1,750-strong workforce has trainee status.

New recruit Jake Page has joined Redrow Homes (Midlands) in Tamworth as a sales graduate, following in the footsteps of Lewis Kavanagh.

Jake, 21, from Sutton Coldfield, graduated from the University of Birmingham in the summer with a 2:1 in geography and urban regional planning.

Jake comments:

“Geography was my favourite subject at school and I’ve always been interested in the built environment – I can’t help but notice nice residential properties when I’m out and about – so working in the housing industry seemed like a natural career path to follow.”

“I’ve spent time in different departments including sales, technical, commercial and land, as well as out on site with the construction team learning about the processes involved in building homes. I’ve really enjoyed it so far as everyone’s really friendly and welcoming. I’ve learnt a lot, especially on site speaking to the different trades.

“The biggest challenge will be learning the legal and financial side of things, but hopefully I’ll grasp it quite quickly.”

Leeds University graduate Lewis Kavanagh joined Redrow in 2014. Initially he faced a four-hour round commute by public transport between his home in Northampton and the Redrow office in Tamworth, but has since passed his driving test and thankfully reduced his journey time.

Lewis said:

“The training from Redrow is really good with lots of workshops, plus lots to learn on site on the job. The highlight has been helping first time buyers achieve their dream and move into their own home and seeing that they’re really happy.”

Applications for FTSE-250 housebuilder Redrow’s 2016 graduate training programmes have now closed.

The company also offers opportunities for building trade, office and technical apprentices and under-graduate work placements.
