Well established energy company GDF Suez has recently opened a new, sustainable flagship operational centre in Aberdeen in partnership with Sika Sarnafil.
The new 40,000 square feet four storey glass fronted building, launched in October 2014, has been constructed on a brownfield site on North Esplanade West using Sika Sarnafil’s comprehensive single ply roofing solutions; and it has achieved an ‘excellent’ Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) rating.
The global energy player first approached Sika Sarnafil in 2013 requiring the construction of a prestigious office in Scotland. With almost 4,000 employees in the region and a commitment to supporting the local area, both businesses sought a way to produce a sustainable structure that would not only have little impact on the environment now but also for years to come.
Sika Sarnafil provided a complete project specific life cycle assessment of the roofing system which enabled GDF Suez to quantify the effect of using these materials for the project.
Rob Buchan, Aberdeen General Manager at GDF SUEZ E&P UK, said:
“When looking for a new location, it was important to us that we stayed in the city centre as we wanted to benefit the wider community. We are very proud that we chose a brownfield location that would enhance the regeneration of Aberdeen city centre and riverside area and have a positive economic impact. We are committed to growing our business in the UK North Sea and our new building provides the ideal base to drive forward our operations from Aberdeen.”
GDF Suez needed a tried and tested roof waterproofing system that would be fully accredited and provide a quality guarantee.
Sika’s Sarnafil S327- 18EL system in Light Grey was specified for the mechanically fixed roof and installed by Registered Contractor Briggs Amasco Aberdeen. The polyester reinforced single ply membrane offers outstanding resistance to weathering and demonstrates excellent flexibility even in cold temperatures.
The roof build-up is easy to dismantle at the end of its long life span and therefore relatively straightforward to recycle, making it a more sustainable solution. And the BBA certificates states an independently assessed life expectancy of “in excess of 40 years”.
Dr. Sarah Peake, Product Sustainability Manager at Sika Limited, said:
“Environmental responsibility is a key consideration for Sika which is reflected in our achievement of the internationally recognised ISO14001 Standard and the introduction of the comprehensive Global Reporting Initiative (GRI) Sustainability Reporting Framework. As such, we strive to develop high quality, long-life products, ensuring the performance is maximised and gives longevity. Our ethos is to take a holistic approach to sustainable development. This is demonstrated by Sika Sarnafil’s specific LCA information that amongst other things, considers the manufacturing process involved and the durability of the materials. This cuts through any ‘green wash’, providing the customer with a more robust view of the impacts of the proposed products.”
Sika is renowned throughout the world for providing high quality, long lasting single ply roofing solutions.
Whether it’s a flat, pitched, vertical, wave form, domed, concave or convex roof, we can provide a solution for almost any type of roof structure.
