East Thames helps local residents construct a career

12 young people from east London celebrated the successful completion of a construction course at a graduation ceremony last week.

The eight week Construct your Career programme, run by the Building Crafts College along with employment support from the East Thames Employment Hub in Beckton, taught invaluable hands-on skills such as painting, decorating and plumbing.

The course leads to a construction skills certificate which leaves the graduates fully qualified to gain jobs in construction. On finishing the course, many of the group had already been interviewed by potential employers, and 3 of the graduates had secured job offers.

Martin, who has since started his new job at construction services company Fortel said:

“The whole experience was great, everyone was helpful, from Shakir and his team at the employment hub, to the college, and other people on the course. I’ve actually already started work in construction because of this course.”

Shakir Sayed, Community Programmes Co-ordinator for East Thames said:

“This group were really fun to work with and their work was excellent so it’s great to see the course graduates go on to jobs in construction. The Building Crafts College said they were one of the best groups they have had through their doors. Through many training courses at the hub and via other East Thames employment projects, including Construct Your Career, we’ve managed to help more than 200 local people just like Martin gain valuable employability skills this year alone.”
