Developers announce start of major new Gateshead ASDA project

Work has started on a major new retail development in Felling town centre, in Gateshead.

The scheme is to be anchored by ASDA and is being developed by a joint venture between Caddick Developments and The Felling Syndicate.

The project was granted planning permission in 2012 and has been pre-let to ASDA for a new 29,000 sq ft food store. A number of other retailers including Boots, Lloyds Bank and Greggs have also signed up to the development which will be completed and trading by early 2016.

Over the next few weeks, a number of existing buildings are being demolished in order to clear the site before construction work commences in January 2015.

Myles Hartley, director at Caddick Developments, said:

“This is a major milestone for the project.”

“We have been working very hard behind the scenes with our partners, The Felling Syndicate, to bring this exciting new development to the area and we are delighted that work can now begin on site, starting with the demolition and building process.”

John Reeves, of Helmsley Group, representing The Felling Syndicate, added:

“We have overcome a number of challenges in getting this scheme on site and we are very grateful, in particular to Gateshead Council, for their support and pro-active approach.”

“The community deserves first class shopping facilities and the Felling development will go a long way to enhancing the retail offering for shoppers as well as encouraging more people into the town centre.”

The partnership has worked closely with Gateshead Council to bring this new retail development to the area, and all building work is being undertaken by Caddick Construction.
