London Festival of Architecture comes to East Village

East Village, the former London 2012 Athletes’ Village, is to be part of the world’s largest annual architecture festival. From 1st – 30th June the London Festival of Architecture (LFA) will have a presence in E20 with a spatial installation exploring the theme of ‘identity’.

Get Living, the build-to-rent trailblazer behind East Village, has commissioned the installation on Victory Parade to mark its 5th anniversary. Created by designers Pidgin Perfect in collaboration with Tenement, ‘Subtle Shifts’ will encourage East Village residents and visitors to find their own uses for the space – informing the developing identity of the neighbourhood.

‘Subtle Shifts’ combines subtle aesthetic with high quality craftsmanship, inviting those who live, work and play around the area to be curious  about the space and make it their own by hosting workshops, clubs and classes. . The timber pavilion creates a gathering place and new public area for use by residents, businesses, community organisations and visitors to East Village.

Marc Cairns, Managing Director at Pidgin Perfect, says:

“We’re thrilled to have been given the opportunity to create an installation that gives E20 residents and visitors the opportunity to shape the developing identity of the neighbourhood. East Village, E20, is a new community, so the ‘identity’ theme of this year’s festival was extremely fitting for this spatial-intervention.

“The timber structure we’ve crafted in collaboration with Tenement incorporates smaller portions of seating, storage, shading, shelter and signage, offering formal and informal opportunities for the public to engage with the installation. We can’t wait to see how it’s used!”

On Saturday 2nd June from 3pm – 4.30pm, Subtle Shifts will officially launch ‘Study Circle’ in Victory Parade, with a talk from four creative experts across architecture and planning to discuss this year’s theme of ‘identity’. Speakers include Pidgin Perfect’s Marc Cairns, Sandra Youkhana from You+Pea, deputy chair at London Festival of Architecture, Martyn Evans and Sofia Niazi of Rabbit Road & OOMK.

The outdoor event is an opportunity for the audience to explore how subtle changes made to space can lead to wider long-term shifts in the identity of a place.
